Guiris in Granada

Guiri nm turista de otro país foreigner, foreign tourist

Generally, the term guiri, is just a more coloquial descriptive term to replace extranjero. Of course I would add that it is sometimes a pejorative term used to describe folks from outside of Spain. But amongst the folks I know, it is used with care and at times in jest. And in the end, I suppose just gotta own it. 🙂

Anyway, let’s just say, there’s lots of us here in our neighbourhood, the Albaicin. It is strange and wonderful mix of Albaicinera families, students, guiris and more. Lots of movement. Lots of coming and going.

Here in the Albaicin, there are a number of families who are here for a sabbatical year. Folks who, like us, have brought their families to learn Spanish, see a bit more of the world and open their world a bit. Many go to the school that our girls go to so there is quite a community of whatsapp groups, sharing, tapas nights and travel.

Lately, I have had a lot of requests for sessions with these families and it has been such a joy helping them capture just a little bit of their time here in Spain. So here you have, Lori, Jason, Robbie, Matthew and Gabi, a wonderful family from Seattle, soaking up the last bit of their time here in Granada. If you are interested, they have a blog and here is a wonderful post of their year in Spain from the kids’ perspective.

Enjoy!

El Muro

These beauties are just a few of the people I train aerial silks with. This past Sunday was our year end show, “El Muro”. Such a fabulous night.

They are all so powerful and wonderful and full of surprises – such style and sass. So glad to be part of this.

Maybe the circus project will continue here in Spain….

San Miguel Alto with Clare, Chris & the kids

This. Is Callie. And her older brother Zac.

(Who truly is very expressive and wonderful but…. not so fond of picture taking.)

We wandered around their neighbourhood the other day, up to San Miguel Alto and wandered home behind the wall. Despite the pictures above, there really WERE a lot of smiles and laughter.

There was photo bombing. And there were these. These beautiful little moments of laughter. Goodness. This family. Such a lovely time. Such easy laughter and smiles. May we all have this kind of warmth in our hearts.

Pajaritas in the Albaicin

I met Mariam at our girls’ music school while my mom was in town for a visit. Mariam’s little Habibi walked up to my mom and with his little hand, grabbed hers, and took her for a wander. My mom’s heart melted and we made some new friends.  Who knew that a few short months later, I would be wandering the streets of the Albaicin taking pictures of the work of Mariam, paparazzi style?

Mariam is a super talented ceramics and joyeria artist who dabbles in bowties. 🙂 Check out her website and see some of her beautiful creations.

Earlier this week, we spent the morning wandering the Albaicin from Plaza Larga to the Mirador San Nicolas and then down the winding streets to the Calderería. Three models (plus the gorgeous Mariam) and all kinds of bowties.

Enjoy!
